NEW YORK -Investors are holding on to the stock market's rally. Most stocks rose Friday, extending a two-week jump that has added 11 percent to the stock market's major indicators. Disappointing results from Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. hit technology shares, however, and dragged the Nasdaq composite index lower.

Microsoft has rejected claims that it deliberately put a backdoor in Windows 7 at the request of NSA (National Security Agency) which would allegedly allow NSA to spy on users. Some parties are also concerned that Microsoft might be compelled to do so as the US government is one of its most important customers, though other experts note that the consequences of allowing such a thing to be included could be even more severe. But others suggested even more extensive changes for Microsoft. Scott Crawford, an analyst with Enterprise Management Associates, told eWEEK he would like to see IE take a more proactive approach to stopping attempts to compromise the browser. Folks who attended Microsoft's PDC09 (Professional Developers Conference) should be rather happy, as Steven Sinofsky, Windows and Windows Live Division President, announced that all of the PDC09 attendees will be receiving a free Acer Aspire 1420P Convertible Tablet PC. The free tablet was supposedly to show Microsoft's gratitude towards all of the PDC attendees and the support that the developers gave Microsoft during the Windows 7 release. Inside "MinWin": the Windows 7 kernel slims down : Back in 2003, Microsoft assembled a team of engineers to rethink the lowest levels of Windows, so that the OS could be more easily slimmed down and secured to run in servers and embedded applications. From the announcement, it's clear that Chromium OS is built around two principles: web-friendliness and speed. The company says, "All Apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser, and there are no conventional desktop applications." Installing and updating are destined for obsolescence.  

As anticipated, Microsoft last week launched the first, and likely only, public beta of Office 2010. Because this is the last available-to-all milestone for the new suite, Microsoft's geared up to get the beta into the hands of a very large group. "Instead of tens of thousands who tried the Technical Preview, now we're talking about millions and million of people," Takeshi Numoto, the corporate vice president for Office, said in an interview Wednesday.

The first public testing milestone of Office 2010 is now available for download, with Microsoft imposing no limitations on the number of users that can grab the bits, or on the period of availability. Office 2010 Beta Build 14.0.4536.1000 is offered in both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) flavors and can be used until October 2010, when the product is set to expire. Microsoft slaps expiration dates on all its pre-release and trial software, allowing testers to run the software for free in exchange for their feedback.
